Sophie's Spotlight: Alizée

Sometimes it's hard to think about the fact that we are so US-centric. Many acts don't become popular in the US, but set the world on fire. Take Despacito for example, the version without Justin Beiber is what was popular everywhere else except here.

Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked... Let's jump across the Atlantic for a singer who made me google how to type an accent.

Alizée is a French singer who became popular after winning a talent show Graines de Star. After the show, she released her first album Gourmandises in 2000. Her album was a hit with many singles, and it firmly established her as a popular singer.

Her biggest song off of the album was "Moi... Lolita." Altogether, the songs on the album combine her soft innocent singing with a dance-y dance backing.

She later released a second album "Mes courants électriques" and this time with English versions to some of them, just in case you are averse to foreign language in music.

Personally, I like the French better because it is a romance language and sounds more elegant. I'm just saying English ain't the best sounding language.

After hearing the English version though all I hear is her saying "I'm not twenteeeeee"

Worth noting is her dancing ability. She is also a dancer but instead pursued a singing career luckily enough for us. Check out her dancing in the video below

I mean look at those moves.

So sassy!

She later released other albums, but I don't like them as much because the production team changed after her first two albums.

But hey! She's still definitely got the moves! Who knows? Maybe this song is more your style anyway.

It's amazing what we don't know is going on around the world.
