Sophie's Seal of Approval: Motown

This week on the radio show, I looked at some Motown songs. However, the songs I play on the air don't always reflect my favorites. So, I decided to include some Motown songs that I really enjoy, and I didn't include in my radio show.

You Can't Hurry Love- The Supremes

To start off this list I am including "You Can't Hurry Love," and what better way to start this conversation than to diss on Phil Collins. Every time I play the 80's hits radio (designed for 50-year-old males but I listen to it anyway) and the Phil Collins version comes on I wish it wouldn't because the original version is so much better. Now, Phil Collins is just way too easy to make fun, and in all honesty, I like some of his songs, but this song is only meant for the Supremes. Whenever it comes on, it always puts me in a happy mood. Plus, it makes me feel like I'm doing something right by staying single.

Verdict: All the single ladies put their hands up in praise

Superstition- Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder may not be the African American blind musician with a biographical movie about him, but he is perhaps the grooviest. The melody line itself isn't that catchy, but the horns are the real star of the show. It makes me want to sing "bwah bwah bwa bwa bwaaaaah" right along with it. That bassline also makes me want to strut like John Travolta on a sidewalk. This song along with "Somebody's Watching Me" can provide solace for the overly paranoid individuals.

Verdict: Paranoid about the fact that Stevie Wonder does not have a biopic yet

Where Did Our Love Go- The Supremes

Wait? What are the Supremes doing on this list twice? Well, it's my list, my rules. Unlike "You Can't Hurry Love," this song actually has a cover in the 80's, the only difference is I actually really enjoy that one. If anything, these covers are a testament to the songwriting and legacy of Motown records. Plus, if you think of this as a sequel to their other song on this list, then you can see this as the consequences of hurrying love.

Verdict: If you hurry love you might lose it. Seriously where did it go? I literally just had it a moment ago.

My Guy- Mary Wells

A companion to the famous "My Girl" (not the movie), this song was also a hit. Though it may not get the attention of its companion, it is a delightfully upbeat song which highlights the beauty of the classic Motown sound. If these songs were in a relationship with each other, then I feel they would be a nice couple.

Verdict: Two overly possessive people might not make a good couple, but two overly possessive songs would

Stir Fry- Migos

Yup, that is right! Migos is indeed a part of Motown. Ne-Yo is too (he wasn't before but know he has a cool exec role) showing that Motown is still alive. I'm not one for trap music (I do understand why people like it). After trying over and over to find one trap song I liked, I found one.... and it really isn't a trap song at all. Oh well, guess trap music isn't my thing. On a side note, I would have included this on the radio show but it is pretty explicit and I'm not allowed to play that kind of stuff on my show.

Verdict: Explicit stir fries are not radio or restaurant friendly

Thanks for reading! Otherwise, if no one reads this it still was a great excuse to procrastinate studying.

In the meantime, you might see me looking like this in the nice warm weather.
